Sandra Cisneros: Uncensored

Thank you to everyone who joined me for a Q+A with Sandra Cisneros in San Diego last weekend. I enjoyed the opportunity of pulling back the curtain on Sandra and my film project.

I’m directing and producing Sandra Cisneros: Uncensored, a feature-length documentary offering an intimate, unfiltered look at celebrated author Sandra Cisneros, known for The House on Mango Street, as she reflects on her past, present, and future.

Like Fellini’s metaphor of the pearl as an “oyster’s autobiography,” her life reveals beauty shaped by struggle and resilience. Sandra’s “pearl” began with Mango Street, written to process the trauma she witnessed in her work with high-school dropouts. Now a classic, the book has touched millions across generations and cultures, becoming a beacon of identity and belonging.

Sandra’s experience echoes the dislocation many migrants feel, living between worlds, cultures, and identities. Rooted in Nepantla, the Nahuatl word for “in between,” her stories explore this liminal space where hope and loneliness coexist. Though she felt out of place in the U.S., her return to Mexico in 2013 has deeply shaped her commitment to creating art that uplifts marginalized voices.

This documentary captures her ever-evolving creative journey, her straightforward humor, and unwavering advocacy for justice, freedom, and inner peace.

This project is in development, with production slated for 2026. To discuss funding, executive producer opportunities, and distribution partnerships, contact Soco at soco@socoaguilar.com.
