Soco Aguilar > Ama
Ama
Inspired by Google’s time crystal breakthrough and true events, a physicist-turned-disillusioned influencer travels to 1994 San Miguel de Allende to solve her parents’ mysterious disappearance, uncovering a deadly political conspiracy tied to a presidential candidate’s assassination—and discovers that saving herself means confronting love, loss, and letting go.
Amalia’s alchemic journey reveals beauty shaped by trauma. Racing against time’s inevitable pull back to the present, she must uncover the truth that will free her from a lifetime of guilt—and find the courage to confront love, loss, and letting go. The title Ama serves as both her nickname and the active voice of “love” in Spanish, exploring how love manifests while navigating life’s most profound challenges.
This historical fiction draws from writer and producer Soco Aguilar’s firsthand experience documenting the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas and working with acclaimed filmmaker Lourdes Portillo on political corruption in Mexico. The 1994 assassination of presidential candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio (often compared to JFK) inspired the conspiracy at Ama’s heart, set during what NPR called Mexico’s “year of living dangerously.”
The commercial appeal is undeniable. Our disciplined $3-4 million budget positions Ama in the most profitable indie segment—drama-skewed films with sophisticated narratives. According to AFM analysis, almost 60% of the most profitable films (2010-2020) fall in this range, proving the formula for success that Ama delivers.
